How to Care for Ponytail Palm

Beaucarnea recurvata

ABOUT PONYTAIL PALM

The Ponytail Palm is a fantastic, easy-care houseplant that adds personality and style to any space. Although its name and appearance resemble a palm, the Ponytail Palm is not actually a true palm. Instead, it is more closely related to desert plants in the Agave and Yucca families, which helps explain its resilience and ability to thrive with minimal attention.

This slow-growing plant is an excellent choice for a desk, side table, or coffee table, where its distinctive form can be easily admired. Its swollen, bulb-like trunk stores water, while the long, cascading leaves spill over like a ponytail, giving the plant its playful name. With its sculptural shape and low-maintenance nature, the Ponytail Palm makes a charming and unique gift as well as a stylish accent for any home or office.

WATERING

When should I water my Ponytail Palm?

To see if it needs water, stick your finger about an inch down into the soil. If the feels dry, water. If the soil feels moist, do not water. If you are unsure, check again in a few days.

Never mist your foliage. Misting leaves causes fungal issues and disease. The only plants that are okay to mist are ferns and carnivorous plants.

LIGHT NEEDS

Grows best in high light and can even take some direct sun.

GROWTH

Rarely grows more than 2-3 feet tall.

SOIL NEEDS

Prefers moist, well-drained soil. Because it stores water in its thick trunk, it can survive extended periods with no water – making it a great option for those who travel often or sometimes forget to water.

TEMPERATURE & HUMIDITY

Prefers average humidity and adapts well to normal household temperatures.

FERTILIZING

Can be fertilized March through October with an all-purpose houseplant food. To help it grow optimally and evenly, occasionally dust the leaves, and rotate the pot by a ¼ turn once a month. Prune only when needed.

IS PONYTAIL PALM PET SAFE?

According to the ASPCA, the Ponytail Palm is non-toxic to dogs, cats, and horses.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Leaves that are loose and pull right out or a mushy trunk are both signs of overwatering.
