How to Care for Zebra Plant

Aphelandra squarrosa

ABOUT ZEBRA PLANT

The Zebra Plant is prized for its striking dark green leaves marked with bold white veins that resemble zebra stripes. This dramatic foliage gives the plant a lush, tropical appearance and makes it a standout addition to any indoor plant collection.

When in bloom, typically in late summer or early fall, the Zebra Plant produces tall, golden-yellow flower spikes that can last up to six weeks. Native to the tropical forests of Brazil, this plant appreciates warm, humid environments similar to its natural habitat.

In addition to its beauty, it is valued for helping contribute to cleaner indoor air and a healthier home environment. While it doesn’t require large amounts of water or sunlight, it can be a bit particular about its growing conditions, making it best suited for plant owners who are ready to give it a little extra attention.

Zebra Plant

LIGHT NEEDS

Prefers low to medium lighting.

WATERING

When should I water my Zebra plant?

Thrive in moist, but not wet soil. To see if your plant needs water, stick your finger about an inch down into the soil. If the soil feels dry, water. Do not water if the soil feels moist. Unsure? Check again in a few days.

Never mist your foliage. Misting leaves causes fungal issues and disease. The only plants that are okay to mist are ferns and carnivorous plants.

GROWTH

Slow-growing and rarely need to be repotted.

SOIL NEEDS

Prefer an all-purpose potting mixture with good drainage.

TEMPERATURE & HUMIDITY

Prefer average indoor temperatures and moderate to high humidity. To boost humidity around the plant, place a tray filled with pebbles underneath its saucer or use a humidifier.

FERTILIZING

Fertilize March through October with an all-purpose houseplant food. To help it grow optimally and evenly, occasionally dust the leaves, and rotate the pot by a ¼ turn once a month. Prune only when needed.

ARE ZEBRA PLANTS PET SAFE?

Yes! According to the ASPCA the zebra plant is not toxic to dogs and cats.

TROUBLESHOOTING

If leaves fall off it is likely getting too much or too little water. If the leaves are curling or burning you should move the plant to a location with a little less sunlight.
