HOW TO CARE FOR
ABOUT PONYTAIL PALM
The Ponytail Palm is a fantastic easy care houseplant. Although it’s named and resembles a palm, the ponytail palm isn’t actually a true “palm”. Instead, it shares a closer relation to desert plants in the Agave and Yucca genera.
This slow-growing plant is a wonderful choice for a desk, side table or coffee table.
The bulbous trunk and cascading “ponytail” of leaves offer a unique look. It makes a charming gift.
When should I water my Ponytail Palm?
To see if your Ponytail Palm needs water, stick your finger about an inch down into the soil. If the feels dry, water. If the soil feels moist, do not water. If you are unsure, check again in a few days.
Never mist your foliage. Misting leaves causes fungal issues and disease. The only plants that are okay to mist are ferns and carnivorous plants.
Ponytail Palms grow best in high light and can even take some direct sun.
The Ponytail Palm rarely grows more than 2-3 feet tall.
Ponytail Palms prefer moist, well-drained soil. Because it stores water in its thick trunk, the Ponytail Palm can survive extended periods with no water – making it a great option for those who travel often or sometimes forget to water.
TEMPERATURE & HUMIDITY
Ponytail Palms prefer average humidity and adapt well to normal household temperatures.
Ponytail Palms can be fertilized March through October with an all-purpose houseplant food. To help it grow optimally and evenly, occasionally dust the leaves, and rotate the pot by a ¼ turn once a month. Prune only when needed.
IS PONYTAIL PALM PET SAFE?
According to the ASPCA, the Ponytail Palm is non-toxic to dogs, cats, and horses.
Leaves that are loose and pull right out or a mushy trunk are both signs of overwatering.
