How to Care for Peace Lily

Spathiphyllum spp.

ABOUT

The Peace Lily, or Spathiphyllum, is a popular, easy-care houseplant known for its dark green leaves and graceful white flowers that rise on tall stems above the foliage. Elegant yet low-maintenance, it brings a calm, natural beauty to any indoor space. Because it is considered one of the most effective houseplants for helping filter certain indoor air pollutants, it’s an excellent choice for bedrooms, living rooms, or anywhere in the home where you spend a lot of time.

Peace Lilies symbolize peace, innocence, purity, healing, and hope. They are often given as a thoughtful gift in remembrance of a loved one, or simply to express love, comfort, and care. Their serene appearance and meaningful symbolism make them a timeless plant for both gifting and everyday enjoyment in the home.

WATERING

Stick your finger about an inch down into the soil. If the soil feels dry, water. If the soil feels moist, do not water. If you are unsure, check again in a few days. The plant will wilt dramatically and let you know when it gets too dry, but its leaves will pop back soon after it gets watered.

Never mist your foliage. Misting leaves causes fungal issues and disease. The only plants that are okay to mist are ferns and carnivorous plants.

LIGHT NEEDS

Does well in all indirect light conditions from high to low however, they will flower more often in bright indirect light.

GROWTH

Depends on variety and ranges from twelve inches to three or more feet tall.

SOIL NEEDS

Prefers moist, well-drained soil.

TEMPERATURE & HUMIDITY

Enjoy high humidity and adapt well to normal household temperatures.

FERTILIZING

Fertilize March through October with a bloom-boosting fertilizer. To help it grow optimally and evenly, dust the leaves, and rotate the pot by a ¼ turn once a month.

IS IT PET SAFE?

According to the ASPCA, the Peace Lily is toxic to dogs and cats.

TROUBLESHOOTING

If the edges of the leaves turn brown the plant may require an additional humidity source. If the leaves along the bottom of the plant turn yellow, this could indicate overwatering.
