WATERING

When should I water my Orchid?

Water your Orchid sparingly every 10-14 days when the moss/bark mixture is completely dry. To see if your plant needs water, stick your finger about an inch down into the moss. If it feels dry, water. Do not water if the moss feels moist. Unsure? Check again in a few days.

Never mist your foliage. Misting leaves causes fungal issues and disease. The only plants that are okay to mist are ferns and carnivorous plants.

LIGHT NEEDS

Orchids prefer medium indirect light.

GROWTH

Phalaenopsis Orchids may grow flower stalks up to nineteen inches tall.

SOIL NEEDS

Orchids prefer a potting mix made from bark, sphagnum moss and other materials that help the plant retain water. Phalaenopsis orchids need plenty of air circulation around their root system, so they will not thrive in traditional soil mixes. A tight pot is also best.

TEMPERATURE & HUMIDITY

Orchids prefer warm temperatures but adapt well to normal household temperatures. To induce flowering quickly, the plant prefers a few cooler nights, with temperatures around 55 degrees, to bloom.

FERTILIZING

Prune spent Orchid stems back to a node. Fertilize only when not in bloom. Once buds appear, stop fertilizing. Feeding when the plant is blooming speeds up the lifecycle of the flowers and makes them fall off faster. To help it grow optimally and evenly, occasionally dust the leaves, and rotate the pot by a ¼ turn once a month.

ARE ORCHIDS PET SAFE?

According to the ASPCA, Orchids are non-toxic to dogs, cats and horses.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Never let water sit in the center where the leaves meet. Yellow, mushy leaves are caused by overwatering.
