How to Care for Succulents

Various

ABOUT SUCCULENTS

Succulents are plants with thick fleshy leaves or stems that retain water for survival under arid conditions. They include a broad, loose category of plants, including cacti however cacti differ in that they have needle-like spines. Like Cacti, Succulents are some of the easiest houseplants to own. They thrive indoors with relatively little maintenance and are available in a myriad of sizes and styles.

WATERING

When should I water my Succulents?

During the spring and summer months when they are actively growing and blooming, water every 10-12 days, allowing the water to drain thoroughly. Decrease watering in fall and winter to every 4-6 weeks. To see if your plant needs water, stick your finger about an inch down into the soil. If it feels dry, water. Do not water if the soil feels moist. Unsure? Check again in a few days.

Never mist your foliage. Misting leaves causes fungal issues and disease. The only plants that are okay to mist are ferns and carnivorous plants.

LIGHT NEEDS

They thrive in bright, indirect light.

GROWTH

Heights vary by variety.

SOIL NEEDS

Grow best in a fast-draining potting soil mix formulated specifically for cacti. They also grow well in regular potting soil amended with sand, pebbles, or perlite to increase drainage and aeration.

TEMPERATURE & HUMIDITY

Prefer hot temperatures ranging from 70 to 80 degrees. In the winter, they enjoy a cool down period with indoor temperatures dipping as low as 55 degrees. Average houseplant humidity is best.

FERTILIZING

Fertilize March through October with a Cactus & Succulent plant food. To help it grow optimally and evenly, rotate the pot by a ¼ turn once a month.

ARE SUCCULENTS PET SAFE?

According to the ASPCA, they are toxic to cats and dogs.

TROUBLESHOOTING

The most common issue is overwatering which can cause rot and ultimately kill the plant.
