ABOUT THE LIPSTICK PLANT

The Lipstick plant is a popular and striking houseplant. It gets its name from the vibrant tubular red flowers that appear above a burgundy bud and last for several weeks.

The flowers grow in clusters and, along with the waxy green leaves, have a cascading, vine-like habit. This makes it ideal for use in hanging baskets or tall containers.

Lipstick plants require minimal care and are wonderful air purifiers.

WATERING

When should I water my Lipstick plant?

Lipstick plants prefer consistent moisture. To see if your plant needs water, stick your finger about an inch down into the soil. If it feels dry, water. If the soil feels moist, do not water. If you are unsure, check again in a few days.

Never mist your foliage. Misting leaves causes fungal issues and disease. The only plants that are okay to mist are ferns and carnivorous plants.

LIGHT NEEDS

Lipstick plants require bright indirect light.

Lipstick plants grow to about three feet long.

SOIL NEEDS

Lipstick plants grow best in a sandy mix that is light and well-aerated.

TEMPERATURE & HUMIDITY

Lipstick plants thrive in average indoor temperatures and high humidity. To boost humidity around the plant, place a tray filled with pebbles underneath its saucer or use a humidifier.

FERTILIZING

Fertilize the Lipstick plant March through October with an all-purpose houseplant food. To help it grow optimally and evenly, occasionally dust the leaves, and rotate the pot by a ¼ turn once a month. Prune only when needed.

According to the ASPCA Lipstick plants are non-toxic to dogs, cats and horses.
