How to Care for Gardenia

Gardenia jasminoides

ABOUT GARDENIA

Gardenia are one of the most fragrant houseplants available. They produce pure white blooms that mature to a rich golden yellow.

They are considered a symbol of purity, innocence, and joy thus they make a perfect gift and are used in celebrations such as weddings and baby showers.

WATERING

When should I water my Gardenia?

To see if your plant needs water, stick your finger about an inch down into the soil. If it feels dry, water. If the soil feels moist, do not water. If you are unsure, check again in a few days.

Never mist your foliage. Misting leaves causes fungal issues and disease. The only plants that are okay to mist are ferns and carnivorous plants.

LIGHT NEEDS

Prefer high direct sunlight.

GROWTH

Gardenia bushes will grow 2-3 ft. tall indoors. The tree forms can grow 4-5 ft. tall.

SOIL NEEDS

Prefer consistently moist, well-drained soil.

TEMPERATURE & HUMIDITY

Thrive in high humidity. The plant will thrive in normal room temperatures. To boost humidity around the plant place a tray filled with pebbles underneath its saucer or use a humidifier.

FERTILIZING

If needed, prune every other year for shape and size. Fertilize during the growing season with a fertilizer made for acid-loving plants.

IS GARDENIA PET SAFE?

According to the ASPCA, they are toxic to dogs, cats and horses.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Browning leaves may be caused by poor drainage, lack of humidity, water or not enough sunlight.
