Peonies are truly the belles of the ball in the spring border that no garden should be without. The three most popular types are garden, tree and the Itoh peony.

Garden Variety

These gorgeous plants are known for their enormous blooms with delicate frilly petals. In terms of color, they range from pure white to hot magenta, red, and every shade of pink in between. Not only are they visually stunning, but they also have a fragrance like no other. Even after flowering, these beauties have deeply cut foliage that holds up well once the blooms fade. To maintain their health, be sure to cut them back in the fall. Garden peonies typically arrive in early May at Hicks Nurseries.

Tree Variety

Tree peony flowers can be even larger than regular garden varieties, with a more open form and range of colors. In particular, shades of yellow, purple, and red are among the most popular. To support such size and structure, tree peonies have a woody support system that does not require staking or trimming.

Itoh Varieties

First hybridized by Toichi Itoh in 1948, the Itoh Peonies are a cross between woody tree varieties (Paeonia suffruticosa) and herbaceous garden varieties (P. lactiflora). As a result, this hybrid offers the best of both parents:

  • Enormous flowers and foliage like that of a tree peony
  • Prolific blooming habit, vigorous growth, and stronger stems that hold up the large blooms without staking.

During the growing season, Itoh’s feature a lush, substantial form; however, the stems die back in the fall and must be cut back just as with the herbaceous types.

Whether you prefer the timeless charm of garden varieties, the striking stature of tree types, or the best-of-both-worlds appeal of Itoh hybrids, there’s something for everyone. So as you plan your garden, consider adding a few to create a display that’s as fragrant as it is unforgettable.
