Prayer Plant
Maranta spp.
ABOUT PRAYER PLANT
Popular varieties:
- Red Veined
- Lemon Lime
Prayer plants are prized for their interesting patterned foliage and unique leaf movement. The leaves fold together at night, like a pair of praying hands and open up during the day. They are a low growing, vining plant.
According to the principles of Feng Shui, the plant absorbs negative energy while radiating positive energy. It represents good luck and prosperity making it a popular gift for new homeowners, businesses, and recent graduates.
WATERING
When should I water my Prayer plant?
To see if your plant needs water, stick your finger about an inch down into the soil. If the soil feels dry, water. If the soil feels moist, do not water. If you are unsure, check again in a few days.
Never mist your foliage. Misting leaves causes fungal issues and disease. The only plants that are okay to mist are ferns and carnivorous plants.
LIGHT NEEDS
Prayer plants grow best in medium or bright indirect light.
GROWTH
The average Prayer plant will grow slowly with a low vinging habit.
SOIL NEEDS
Prayer plants prefer a slightly moist but well-drained soil mix.
TEMPERATURE & HUMIDITY
Prayer plants enjoy above-average humidity levels, but typically grow best in most homes. If your air is especially dry in winter, try placing the plant on a tray with water and pebbles to boost humidity.
FERTILIZING
Fertilize March through October. To help it grow optimally and evenly, occasionally dust the leaves, and rotate the pot by a ¼ turn once a month.
ARE PRAYER PLANTS PET SAFE?
Yes, Prayer plants are pet-friendly! According to the ASPCA, Prayer plants are non-toxic to dogs, cats or horses.
TROUBLESHOOTING
If you notice the leaves are drooping, you may have insufficient moisture. This could mean the soil is drying out too much between waterings or that the humidity levels are too low.
