HOW TO CARE FOR

ABOUT BONSAI

Popular plants used in Bonsai:

  • Ficus
  • Japanese Maple
  • Azalea
  • Pine

Bonsai is the ancient art of growing trees in a confined space (usually in a pot or shallow tray) to simulate a certain look in a reduced scale.

Although traditional Japanese bonsai live outdoors, these tiny trees are perfect for adding dramatic flair to indoor spaces such as living rooms, offices, and bedrooms.

WATERING

When should I water my Bonsai?

To see if your plant needs water, stick your finger about an inch down into the soil. If the soil feels dry, water. If the soil feels moist, do not water. If you are unsure, check again in a few days. Bonsai do not like to dry out between waterings or be too moist.

Never mist your foliage. Misting leaves causes fungal issues and disease. The only plants that are okay to mist are ferns and carnivorous plants.

LIGHT NEEDS

Bonsai grow best in medium indirect light.

TEMPERATURE & HUMIDITY

Bonsai thrive in average household temperatures and humidity.

GROWTH

Bonsai sizes vary based on variety and pruning techniques.

SOIL NEEDS

For a healthy Bonsai, use a premium well-draining soil mixture.

PRUNING & FERTILIZING

Pruning and training are the most important requirements for maintaining the size and shape of Bonsai. This involves the removal of vigorous new growth in the spring and occasionally throughout the growing season. Never remove all new growth. Occasionally, the plant should be removed from the pot or tray and root pruning should be done to maintain the plant’s size.

For training branches, soft copper wire can be used to loosely wind around branches and gently bend them to the desired shape and direction. The wire should be removed several months later before it scars or cuts into the bark.

Bonsai should be repotted every two to five years. Trim away the outer layers of roots and clean the pot thoroughly before repotting the tree.

ARE BONSAI PET SAFE?

Since Bonsai are crafted out of several different types of plants, we cannot say for certain if the plant you choose is toxic to pets. Please speak with a member of our team before buying a Bonsai if you are concerned about pets or small children.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Yellowing leaves or needles can be a sign of overwatering, which leads to root rot. Faded leaves can be a symptom of light deprivation.
