How to Care for Orchids
Phalaenopsis amabilis
ABOUT ORCHIDS
Phalaenopsis orchids produce spectacular, long-lasting blooms that can flower for several weeks at a time, often arching gracefully along tall stems. Known for their refined beauty, these elegant plants symbolize luxury, strength, and admiration.
In Feng Shui, orchids are also associated with fertility, harmony, and positive energy, making them a meaningful addition to many homes and offices.
They are available in a wide range of colors, from crisp white and soft pastels to vibrant pinks and rich purples. Their delicate petals and symmetrical blooms create a sense of sophistication and calm. The orchid’s graceful form and timeless appeal, make it a wonderful gift and easy way to elevate any interior space.
WATERING
When should I water my Orchid?
Water sparingly every 10-14 days when the moss/bark mixture is completely dry. To see if your plant needs water, stick your finger about an inch down into the moss. If it feels dry, water. Do not water if the moss feels moist. Unsure? Check again in a few days.
Never mist your foliage. Misting leaves causes fungal issues and disease. The only plants that are okay to mist are ferns and carnivorous plants.
LIGHT NEEDS
Prefers medium indirect light or a north facing window.
GROWTH
Phalaenopsis Orchids may grow flower stalks up to nineteen inches tall.
SOIL NEEDS
Prefer a potting mix made from bark, sphagnum moss and other materials in a tight pot to help the plant retain water. They need plenty of air circulation around their root system, so they will not thrive in traditional soil mixes.
TEMPERATURE & HUMIDITY
Prefers warm temperatures but adapt well to normal household temperatures. To induce flowering quickly, the plant prefers a few cooler nights, with temperatures around 55 degrees, to bloom.
FERTILIZING
Prune spent stems back to a node. Fertilize only when not in bloom. Once buds appear, stop fertilizing. Feeding when the plant is blooming speeds up the lifecycle of the flowers and makes them fall off faster. To help it grow optimally and evenly, occasionally dust the leaves, and rotate the pot by a ¼ turn once a month.
ARE ORCHIDS PET SAFE?
According to the ASPCA, Orchids are non-toxic to dogs, cats and horses.
TROUBLESHOOTING
Never let water sit in the center where the leaves meet. Yellow, mushy leaves are caused by overwatering.
