The cold wet weather has not prevented the annual onslaught of aphids in the garden. Aphids are one of the most common pest problems in the flower and vegetable garden. They attack many different plants and can be a season long problem. The small oval shaped insects attack the new growth of plants and multiply very quickly. So far we have seen them on roses but they will be finding other hosts as the spring and summer progress.
Since they multiply very quickly it’s important to spot the problem early before they overwhelm the plant. They are pretty easy to control with organic insecticides, our favorite is Bonide Neem Oil. It kills the aphids you spray and helps prevent more aphids in the future. Aphids are also a favorite food source for ladybugs. Just release them into the problem area and walk away. They will do the rest for you.
Remember to check your garden for problems weekly to prevent a small problem from becoming a big one.
