There is good news for gardeners – a new variety of impatiens has emerged that is safe to plant in Long Island gardens. “Bounce” impatiens are resistant to the downy mildew, perform well in sun or light shade and are available in many beautiful shades of pink, purple and white.

Bounce Impatiens are resistant to the downy mildew which plagued traditional impatiens in Long Island gardens over the last several years. In addition to tolerating both sun and light shade, the well-branched plants also “bounce” back like magic after wilt. They are perfect for patio pots, hanging baskets or the front of a garden border.

“The Bounce Impatiens performed beautifully in my garden. I was impressed with their durability and the brightness of the flowers. I’d suggest them to anyone looking for a good replacement to impatiens walleriana” said John Merlein, Merchandise Manager and Annual Program Planner for Hicks Nurseries.

Choosing to carry this new variety of Impatiens at Hicks Nurseries was a process that began several years ago. The garden center is focused on finding the best performing plants for Long Island, often testing new varieties in their own gardens before offering them for sale to the public.

“I planted the white Bounce Impatiens in my backyard. Some in shade and some in sun. Both performed equally well” said Alison Caldwell, Horticultural Buyer for Hicks Nurseries.

“Last summer I grew lavender Bounce Impatiens by my pool. They had the same look and feel as the old fashioned Impatiens, but with no problems” said Walt Dworkin, Sales Associate and Plant Hybridizer, Hicks Nurseries.

Bounce Impatiens are available in shades of cherry, lilac, violet, pink and white and will be available at the nursery beginning in early May.
